At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
